Re-Entry Conference

On September 14, the Division of Criminal Justice, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Department of Human Services' Supportive Housing and Homeless Program and El Paso County Department of Justice Services sponsored a Community Re-entry Summit attended by 200 persons. Discussions began in November of 2005 when DCJ invited state, local, non-profit and faith-based agencies to form a Community Re-entry Task Force. Beginning with the knowledge that in FY 2005, 8,249 offenders were released from the Dept. of Corrections and that numerous offenders also were released from CO's county jails, the Task Force learned that D.O.C. statistics show that 48.7% of their offenders will return to prison within 3 years. The group has met monthly to discuss the resulting impact on Colorado's communities. Eight critical areas were identified as issues that can impact an offender's possibility of success in the community, including the lack of communication between state, local and private agencies when serving the offenders in the community. Summit attendees tackled issues, gaps and barriers facing offenders, problem-solved and developed action plans for the future. Over 100 people volunteered to continue working together to address this issue. A summary of the discussion topics, attendees and potential solutions may be accessed by selecting the report below.
